Missionary Linguistics : 宣教に伴う言語学研究

During the "Grand Voyage Era" through the 16th and 17th centuries, dictionaries, grammars, as well as doctrines and disciplines of christianity were produced both in Latin/Spanish/Portuguese and in the languages that were targets of the propaganda. "Missionary Linguistics" is a comparatively young branch of the history of linguistics, which treats these documents as testimonies of the first encounter of the Latin grammar and the languages that are fundamentally different from Latin, in Asia, Africa and South-America.

Sources of "Missionary Linguistics" as well as its researchers are scattered all over the world.

This site has been established in the hope of providing fundamental resources and tools of "Missionary Linguistics" for international cooperative researches, which is called for by nature of the "Missionary Linguistics".

The domain name "joao-roiz.jp" is named after the portuguese missionary Father João Rodriguez Tçuzu ("Tçuzu" meant "interpreter" in Japanese those days), who wrote the very first Japanese grammars in Latin grammatical tradition, Arte da Língoa de Japam (1604-) and Arte Breve da Língoa Japoa (1620), both published by the Jesuit Mission Press.

大航海時代のキリスト教宣教に伴って16～17世紀に作成された布教対象語の研究書(辞書・文法書)及び宗教書(教義書・修徳書等)を、ラテン文法は、全く系統の異なるアジア・アフリカ・南米の諸言語との最初の言語学的邂逅の記録として、「宣教に伴う言語学」という言語学史の新領域の研究対象を形成しています。 「宣教に伴う言語学」は、21世紀に入ってからの研究の進展がめざましい若い研究分野です。

大航海時代の「宣教に伴う言語学」に関連する資料・史料は、歴史的経緯から世界各地に散在しており、研究者も、南米、アフリカ、インド、フィリピン、中国、日本と分散している。又、「宣教に伴う言語学」研究には、当時のラテン・スペイン・ポルトガル語以外に、各布教対象語の十分な知識が必要であり、これらの条件から、必然的に、国際的な共同研究が要請されます。

ドメイン名 joao-roiz.jp は、 ラテン文法体系を基礎とした日本初の文法書 Arte da Língoa de Japam (1604-)、 Arte Breve da Língoa Japoa (1620) を著した通事ロドリゲス João Rodriguez Tçuzu の名に拠ったものです。
